Kyrgyzstan votes against recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel

Bishkek, Dec. 22, 2017. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan at a meeting of the UN General Assembly voted against the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the UN News Center reported.

By an overwhelming majority, Member States in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday “demanded” that all countries comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the status of Jerusalem, following an earlier decision by the United States to recognize the Holy City as the capital of Israel.

Through a resolution adopted by a recorded vote of 128 in favour to nine against (Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Togo, United States), with 35 abstentions, the 193-member Assembly expressed “deep regret” over recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem and stressed that the Holy City “is a final status issue to be resolved through negotiations in line with relevant UN resolutions.

The members of the General Assembly called on states not to open diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Turkmenistan and a number of other delegations did not take part in the voting.

Recall that the special session of the UN General Assembly on the status of Jerusalem was officially requested by Palestine.

As reported, Israel considers Jerusalem its capital. The Palestinian authorities claim that East Jerusalem is under their jurisdiction, although it was occupied by Israel following the 1967 six-day war.
