Bishkek, Nov. 19, 2018. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstani Olzhobai Kudaiberdi uulu won a bronze medal at the world championship in amateur martial arts (MMA), President of the Federation Ulukbek Omurzakov told at a press conference at the Kabar News Agency.
He said that the tournament was held from 11 to 18 November in the city of Manama (Bahrain), in which 52 countries took part.
“The championship was held at the proper level. Kyrgyzstan was represented by two wrestlers. One of them won the bronze award. He stepped on the scales every day, the competitions lasted for 5 days. The Prince of Bahrain himself was following up on the tournament. This sport is being prmoted throughout the world. The preparedness of the rivals was at a high level,” he noted.
Vice President of the Federation Abasbek Dorombaev added that the two largest federations of amateur MMA - WMMAA and IMMAF united and held a joint world championship for the first time.
“The peculiarities of the championship were that the sportsmen were weighed every day before the fight, which corresponds to the new IMMAF rules. Our wrestlers have achieved good results in this tournament. One took the third place, the second 5th. However, due to injury I could not continue my participation. The championship was tough, fair. Representatives of the Olympic Committee took part here. Cases of doping were tracked. In 2024, MMA will most likely become an Olympic sport,” Dorombaev shared his opinion.
President of the Osh Oblast Federation Branch Omurbek Nurmamatov spoke on the problems that Kyrgyz fighters encounter at the championship in Bahrain. He said that the neighboring countries sent for the competition more than 20 fighters, while only two from Kyrgyzstan applied. One of the reasons is financing, almost 2 thousand dollars is required only for one athlete to cover flight, accommodation, food. “If more athletes had gone, the result would have been even better. There were not enough team members. Despite this, our fighters showed excellent results. Those who brought 20 people each didn’t even take the third place,” he stressed.
Bronze medalist Kudaiberdi uulu was able to achieve such a result competing not in his weight category, which makes his victory even more significant.
“I had four fights. Defeated rivals from Sweden, Iceland, Lebanon and lost to a slightly stronger opponent from Russia. In the first battle it was also hard, I w3on due to my scores. My weight is 85 kg, but I was competing in 93 kg weight category. It was felt in battle, they were heavier than me. If it had been my weight category, I would have taken first place,” the medalist said.
Baktiyar Navruzov took part in the competition as well, he became the fifth. The first fight against the tournament favorite from Egypt was the last for him despite the fact that Navruzov defeated him. “I got injured. Broke my hand. Trauma in battle is inevitable. No one is immune from this. Realized it after the fight. I still wanted to fight. Doctors noticed it and did not allow me to participate further,” he said, noting with bitterness that he could have achieved better results.
