Bishkek, Feb. 12, 2021. / Kabar /. The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek has released former head of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan, Mufti of the Kyrgyz Republic Maksat azhy Toktomushev on his own recognizance.
Toktomushev was detained on Thursday by employees of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of the Kyrgyz Republic. He is suspected of financial violations related to the use of funds deposited by pilgrims for the Hajj.
Earlier, on Feb. 10 the mufti wrote a resignation letter.
His resignation has come after financial irregularities were revealed in the activity of the Muftiate.
Money of pilgrims for the Hajj were used for mercenary purposes by providing large loans of over KGS 100 million to private financial institutions and receiving monthly interest payments.
“After these financial transactions were discovered, the leadership of the Board of Muslims offered a bribe of $100,000 to officials of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) to cover up the revealed facts and stop further investigations,” the press service of the SCNS said.
In addition, the Pervomaisky Court reported on Friday that chief accountant of the Board of Muslims has been detained.
He is placed in the detention facility of the National Security Committee until Apr. 10, 2021.
