Last year, women accounted for 85% of domestic violence victims

Bishkek, Dec. 1, 2020. /Kabar/. In 2019, about 8,000 people, most of whom (85%) are women, applied to crisis centers and other specialized institutions providing social and psychological assistance to the population in cases of domestic violence.

According to the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry's press service, last year the number of criminal cases of domestic violence initiated and sent to courts for consideration increased 2.7 times in comparison with 2015, mainly due to an increase in the number of cases of light and less serious injury to health.

In 2019, the republic's internal affairs agencies registered 7,455 offences related to domestic violence in the Unified Register of Crimes and Misdemeanors, of which more than 70% were cases of domestic violence.

The capital city of Bishkek accounted for the largest number of cases of domestic violence (42%), followed by Chui (20%) and Osh (11%) Oblasts.
