Bishkek, Aug. 10, 2020 / Kabar /. A two-week campaign to clean up the Lenin Peak (height 7,134 meters), from garbage has started in Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
The event was initiated by the Tourism Department under the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism of the Kyrgyz Republic with the financial support of the Government of Switzerland, the European Union, Helvetas Kyrgyzstan, the Aga Khan Foundation and UNDP.
A total of USD 17,620 was provided by donors. These funds will be used for food, accommodation and payment for the services of mountaineers-guides, transportation of the collected garbage from the peak to the landfill in the village of Daroot-Korgon, as well as bags, gloves and other necessary equipment.
According to a study conducted in 2018-2019. The Kyrgyz Republican Mountaineering Club together with Edinburgh Napier University (UK), the state of the ecological situation on the Lenin Glacier under the peak of the same name is assessed as catastrophic (link to these materials https://clck.ru/M9UKt).
“Today, as a result of mountaineering tourism at Lenin Peak, a huge amount of garbage has been formed, which has been accumulating since Soviet times. In this regard, the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism of the Kyrgyz Republic was tasked with organizing seasonal garbage collection, ensuring the maintenance of the proper sanitary condition of the camps and organizing control over the environmental situation at Lenin Peak, ”said Vladimir Komissarov, head of the Lenin Peak Tour Operators Association.
The difficulty of organizing cleaning is that household waste is found in high-mountainous areas in the locations of climbers' camps (3600 m - 6300 m). In this regard, garbage collection is possible only with the participation and coordination of professional climbers.
The initiative will contribute to a greener recovery of the tourism sector from the current crisis and increase the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan for tourists in the coming seasons.
Lenin Peak is one of the highest peaks in Central Asia, situated between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Pamir mountain chain.
