Bishkek, Nov. 23, 2018. /Kabar/. Over the past 10-15 years, the number of large and small cattle has increased by 50%. And the cultivation area, for example, for wheat, has decreased. This suggests that livestock prevails now in our country, staff member at UCA's Institute of Public Policy and Administration Kanat Tilekeyev told during an event for discussion on the level of food production in Kyrgyzstan.
He said that there is no real problem of hunger in the country.
“But we are very dependent on staple foodstuffs - wheat, flour, since we ourselves do not produce grain crops, but bring this product from Kazakhstan. These products also include seed oil, poultry, fish, sugar and confectionery,” Tilekeyev said.
He also noted that import deliveries had become slightly cheaper, thus the situation stabilized.
“A for the level of poverty in the country, after 2008, food prices began to rise in our country, thus the level of rural and urban poverty decreased. For example, in Talas oblast, the poverty indicator is much better than in the country due to the production of beans,” the employee said.
He further added that the situation is quite different in the southern regions.
“The south of the country is poor, because of the most unstable food safety there. And this all is due to the high population density, the locals are dependent on weather conditions, there is little access to water. The main direction in agricultural activity is arable farming, that is, it is a constant risk, again, due to weather conditions,” Kanat Tilekeyev said.
