Bishkek, April 11, 2021 . / Kabar / . In Kyrgyzstan, elections to local councils and a referendum on the draft of the new Constitution has begun on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Bishkek time.
Chairwoman of the Central Elections Commission Nurzhan Shaildabekova said that a total of 2,483 polling stations are working. Elections to local councils will be held in 448 towns and villages at 2,273 polling stations.
A total of 3,318,130 voters registered for the local elections and 3,606,201 - for the referendum.
The chairwoman also added that 183 international observers and 11 Kyrgyz public organizations have been registered and about 179 foreign and local media will cover the election day.
Polling stations for referendum voting will be opened abroad, too. In total, 48 PECs are planned to be opened. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstanis abroad will not be able to vote for local council elections.
Over 30% of the total number of voters must vote in order to recognize the referendum valid.
As of today, there are over 3.5 million voters in Kyrgyzstan. At the referendum, citizens will vote only "for" or "against" the new Constitution.
Citizens will be issued two slips of paper in different colors and two biometric identification cards for voting in the local and referendum elections. Two different automated ballot boxes will also be installed.
