Local councils elections. Polling stations closed in Kyrgyzstan

Local council elections in Kyrgyzstan began Nov. 17 at 8:00 a.m.

In 33 city councils, 4,928 candidates competed on party lists. Meanwhile, number of candidates registered in 231 aiyl councils made 10,081.

Due to the administrative-territorial reform, local councils were dissolved and new elections were scheduled.

Before the reform, there were 32 city and 452 ayil councils (484 in total). After the reform, their number decreased to 33 urban and 231 aiyl councils (264 in total), which is a 59% reduction. Accordingly, the number of mandates has also decreased.

Also, these elections were held with a number of peculiarities. In particular, remote voting was implemented for the first time in Kyrgyzstan.

For this purpose, 10 polling stations were opened throughout the country.
