Locusts damage 45 thsd hectares of farmland in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, June 18, 2024. /Kabar/. In Kyrgyzstan, locusts were detected on 76 thousand 210 hectares of agricultural land.

Currently, 44 thousand 950 hectares have been destroyed by harmful locusts.

Due to the fact that locusts are a particularly dangerous pest and can cause enormous damage to agricultural crops, funds for their destruction are provided in the republican budget.

According to specialists’ forecasts, the spread of locusts in Kyrgyzstan in 2024 is projected to cover 65 thousand hectares, for which funding in the amount of 33,537.8 thousand soms is provided from the republican budget.

To carry out relevant work in this direction, all the necessary special equipment is provided on the basis of the Department of Chemicalization, Plant Protection and Quarantine of the Kyrgyz Republic. Events are carried out in a timely manner.

It is worth noting that the peculiarity of this year is that due to favorable spring weather and climatic conditions in areas where there were no locust outbreaks before, there is an increase and a sharp increase in the number of outbreaks of harmful locusts. In this current situation, there is a risk of increasing the area of ​​agricultural crops and pastures occupied by locusts.

According to the biology of the locust pest, mass hatchings occur every 8-11 years. In Kyrgyzstan, the peak was registered in 1980 - 570.0 thousand hectares, in 1989 - 160.0 thousand hectares, in 2008 - 157.0 thousand hectares and in 2018 - 146.0 thousand hectares.
