The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has included Tashkent's mahalla, the historical quarters of the Uzbek capital, on its provisional list of cultural heritage, daughter of Uzbek president, Deputy Chairwoman of the Foundation for Art and Culture Saida Mirziyoyeva told Thursday.
She noted that it is a historic event of the world scale. Mahallas in Tashkent are part of the country's traditional residential development and are places where culture and traditions are preserved.
Four cultural sites in Uzbekistan have already been inscribed on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. In 1993, the historical center of Bukhara was included there, in 2000 - the historical center of Shakhrisyabz, in 1990 - fortress Ichan Kala, in 2001 - Samarkand as the crossroads of cultures and in 2016 - Western Tien-Shan natural site.
In Central Asia, the concept of mahalla refers to a traditional communal-type social institution or quarterly form of organization of social life. In southern Kyrgyzstan, the word "maala" is often used in the local dialect.
