Major irrigation project in Osh Oblast to be completed soon

Bishkek, Aug. 13, 2020. /Kabar/. As part of his working visit to Osh Oblast, today Aug. 13 President Sooronbay Jeenbekov inspected an irrigation project to restore internal canals in Uzgen region.

According to the press service of the Kyrgyz president, irrigation water has been one of the main problems in the village of Kurshab for many years, the outdated irrigation system needed rehabilitation.

To solve the problem, it was necessary to restore the irrigation system. The developed project of rehabilitation of irrigation systems was approved and financed by the World Bank.

Rehabilitation work began in April 2019. To date, the main works have been almost completed.

With full implementation of this project, water supply will improve on 1.5 thousand hectares of nearby lands.

The head of state reminded that implementation of national projects on construction and rehabilitation of irrigation systems is the main direction of the state policy of regional development.

The State Program for Irrigation Development in the Kyrgyz Republic until 2026 consists of 3 stages, 2 of which will be implemented until 2024 inclusive.

During this period, it is planned to commission 31 water facilities. As a result, 27 thousand hectares of new irrigated lands will be developed and water supply of 46 thousand hectares of land will be improved. In 2020 it is planned to develop 1700 hectares of new irrigated lands.

In addition to budget funds, international development partners, most of which are grants, are being actively attracted for implementation of irrigation projects.
