Bishkek, Sept. 15, 2020 / Kabar /. The world media experts discussed the COVID-19 pandemic during the online World Journalists Conference 2020.
The second day of the conference, was devoted to the COVID-19 pandemic and how the countries deal with it.
The participants of the conference shared the experiences in fighting the COVID-19 and disease control methods in various countries.
Habib Toumi, the Media Consultant in Bahrain Ministry of Information said about preparedness of countries to the pandemic.
“The world was not ready. The pandemic has tested the ability of governments around the world to take action and confront the virus,” he said speaking at the conference.
The media consultant also noted that throughout the pandemic, some countries showed they were better ready to handle the situation than others.
“As each government had its own considerations and views for the most appropriate way to deal with the virus, it became obvious there would be no universal response to the coronavirus,” he added.
In addition, the media experts emphasized the role of media and cooperation in fighting the pandemic.
Reporter Chen Yingqun of China Daily stressed that the global cooperation is essential in the world’s fight against the pandemic.
“Global media outlets need actively promote international cooperation, share successful antiepidemic experiences and practices of countries like China and South Korea,” she said.
Dr. Hassan Humeida from University of Kiel of Germany considers that the corona will not be the last infection of its kind. Therefore he highlighted that the world should be prepared to continue to need each other.
“Each country should benefit from the other from their innovative systems, for example through the establishment of functioning systems in the field of health and prevention,” he said.
Hayim Iserovich of Maariv Daily from Israel stressed the important and crucial role of the media in reporting, explaining, and demanding full accountability in the name of the public in every crisis – especially in that kind of one-in-a-hundred year crisis.
Freelance journalist and filmmaker from Pakistan Rahul Aljaz also said that the media played an interesting role from hyping up the number of cases and scaring people into complying to the government’s orders to becoming less aggressive in the last couple of months.
About 100 journalists, media experts from about 60 countries participate in the three-day online conference, hosted by the Journalists Association of Korea.
The conference, which has started on Monday, focuses on three themes - fake news and the future of journalism, global responses to COVID-19, and the 70th anniversary of the Korean War and peace policy on the Korean Peninsula.
