Media industry is undergoing great changes, Zhang Yanqiu, Professor of Communication University of China told during online meeting with journalists within the framework of series of seminars organized by the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Commission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Global Times Online.

She said that before there was the traditional “Old Three” ( the press, radio and television). “Now media actively develop mobile apps and web sites and the social media has been widely applied in China,” she stressed.

The professor of the Chinese university also said that there is a media convergence in China. “That’s quite a new name and term in China that means that the traditional media will be transformed into innovative forms of news making.

Zhang Yanqiu noted that the most of traditional media, including the television, newspapers, magazines and news agencies, are still owned by the government or by the state. “But their operational model has been changed to the market. So, huge changes taken place. Its owned by the state but they can support themselves through market channels,” she added.

Professor Zhang Yanqiu stressed that Chinese media landscape is one of the richest in the world and is very diverse. “In the past 30-40 years media in China has changed a lot. One core change is the media has changed from government owned structure into market owned structure and also traditional media into new media and social media,” the professor said.

Speaking about freedom of the Chinese media, the professor noted that the principle of their work is fundamentally differs from the Western ones. "Our communications are aimed at the development of the economy and society. They are distinguished by responsibility for the security, stability of the country and its people. Western media more disseminate conflicts, focus on the negative aspects of life," Zhang Yanqiu said.

She also added that the Chinese media are working to strengthen stability in the country, for the solidarity of the people.
