Migration Service of Kyrgyzstan and UNHCR discuss supporting refugees

Bishkek, Aug. 2, 2018 / Kabar /. Chairman of the State Migration Service Bolotbek Ibraimzhanov met in Bishkek on Wednesday with Regional Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Central Asia Yasuko Oda.

Yasuko Oda spoke about the activities of UNHCR in the Kyrgyz Republic on granting asylum and protecting the rights of refugees. She also noted that UNHCR supports Kyrgyzstan in the implementation of international obligations and the implementation of legislation in this direction.

Bolotbek Ibraimzhanov thanked the UNHCR office for the provided support, told about problems related to the further development of the asylum system and procedures for determining refugee status.

Kyrgyzstan joined the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees and the Protocol thereto in 1996. Since that period, the republic began to receive refugees and implement long-term measures in the sphere of refugees (voluntary repatriation, integration into the local community, resettlement to third countries).

Summing up the meeting, the sides expressed their satisfaction with the level of cooperation and readiness for further joint activities in the sphere of refugees.
