Ministry of Energy comments construction of nuclear power plant in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, Jan. 21, 2022. / Kabar /. The Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan and Rosatom State Corporation of Russia signed on Jan. 20 on the sidelines of EXPO-2020 a memorandum of cooperation in a wide range of areas in the field of energy development.

The press service of the ministry said one of the topics of the preliminary discussion of ways of cooperation between the Ministry of Energy of t Kyrgyzstan and the Russian state corporation is the issue of a comprehensive study of the possible joint construction of a low-power nuclear power plant.

The report said that at this stage, the Kyrgyz side has only expressed interest in studying the promising development of Russian nuclear scientists based on the RITM-200N reactor.

It is noted that the decision to build a nuclear power plant in the territory of Kyrgyzstan can only be made following a fairly long process, which will include all the processes of multilateral expertise required by law, primarily environmental safety, and the development and approval of a feasibility study, and, most importantly, nationwide discussion and passing through all stages of coordination in the state bodies of Kyrgyzstan.

The memorandum also provides for cooperation in the development of joint work to improve the skills of scientific and technical personnel of the system of the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic in various fields of energy.
