Mittal: Cooperation of UNODC and Kyrgyz SSEP in preventing extremism is an example for Central Asian countries

Bishkek, Apr. 4, 2019. /Kabar/. On April 3, 2019, Chairperson of the State Service for Execution of Punishment of Kyrgyzstan (SSEP) Melis Turganbaev met Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Central Asia Ashita Mittal and UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in the Kyrgyz Republic Aliona Niculita, the press service of the SSEP reported.

During the meeting, Turganbaev thanked the UN structures for their support and expressed a wish to continue the fruitful cooperation.

In turn, Ashita Mittal stressed that over the past 4 years she had visited many penitentiary institutions in Central Asia and cooperation in the prevention of violent extremism in the penitentiary system of Kyrgyzstan is a good example for neighboring countries.

The sides signed a plan for implementing the project of the Peacebuilding Fund “Preventing the Spread of Extremist Ideas among Convicts in the Penal System of the Kyrgyz Republic”.

The plan includes the following activities:

- construction of meeting rooms and creation of a production site in correctional colony 27;

- creation of 10 pilot probation services (repair, equipment with necessary technologies);

- creation of a monitoring center (3 million soms allocated);

- creation of a call center;

- expert support to improve the legislative framework;

- support in the implementation of the Law on Probation;

- creation of an automated system of social and psychological diagnostics;

- introduction of an automated system for risk assessment and classification of convicts.

At the end of the meeting, Ashita Mittal once again expressed her impression with the results of the cooperation of the UN agencies with the SSEP.
