Over 2.8 million people die every year as a result of workplace accidents or work-related illnesses, chairman of the central committee of the mining and metallurgical union of the Kyrgyz Republic, director of the center for research on social and labor relations, Eldar Tadzhibaev told.
April 28 is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. More than 100 countries mark it.
Tadzhibaev noted that the main reasons for such cases are failure to comply with the requirements and standards of labor protection and safety.
“In our country, the mining industry, construction, transport and energy are considered the most traumatic. The number of registered industrial accidents varies annually at the level of 150 cases per year, excluding mild cases. 50 of them are fatal. More than 500 working citizens are injured annually and lose their ability to work. In many enterprises of the informal sector, where there are no trade unions and workers do not know their labor rights, such cases remain latent. The true number of labor injuries and deaths at work is much greater,” said the chairman of the union.
