Bishkek, Feb. 10, 2021. / Kabar /. Head of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan Maksat azhy Toktomushev wrote on Wednesday a resignation letter, Kabar Agency has learnt from the press service of the Muftiate.
Resignation of the mufti comes after financial irregularities were revealed in the activity of the Muftiate.
It is found that money deposited by pilgrims for the Hajj were used for mercenary purposes by providing large loans of over KGS 100 million to private financial institutions and receiving monthly interest payments.
“After these financial transactions were discovered, the leadership of the Board of Muslims offered a bribe of $100,000 to officials of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) to cover up the revealed facts and stop further investigations,” the press service of the SCNS said.
Pre-trial proceedings were initiated in this case, and a chief accountant was detained the same day red-handed while giving a bribe to SCNS officials.
The chief accountant was taken to the detention facility of the National Security Committee. An investigation is under way.
Maksat Toktomushev has been Mufti of Kyrgyzstan since March 2014.
