Bishkek, April 9, 2022 / Kabar /. Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Edil Baisalov met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Michelle Bachelet as part of his working visit to Geneva.
The interlocutors discussed topical issues of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and UN bodies and mechanisms in the field of human rights, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported.
In a conversation, Edil Baisalov noted that over the years of independence, the Kyrgyz Republic has grown into a mature and responsible participant in the international community and has come a long way in building a legal and democratic state.
“Our people do not tolerate injustice and put freedom above material values. As a result of our struggle, we were able to achieve fair and transparent elections in the country. Today, a democratic and fully legitimate government has been established in Kyrgyzstan, pursuing its policy in the interests and with the support of the overwhelming majority. This is democracy,” he said.
Edil Baisalov also took the opportunity to provide detailed explanations on some issues of the current situation that are of concern to the international human rights community.
For her part, Michelle Bachelet, who twice served as President of Chile in the past, expressed her readiness to continue supporting the progressive strengthening of mechanisms and guarantees for ensuring human rights in the Kyrgyz Republic. In particular, Michelle Bachelet expressed support for the initiative of the Cabinet of Ministers to raise the status of the institution of the Ombudsman and strengthen guarantees for the independence of its activities.
