Bishkek, Dec. 25, 2023 /Kabar/. Ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic Jamilya Jamanbaeva and members of the European Parliament held a meeting, the press service of the Ombudsman reported.
The meeting took place in Bishkek, in the building of the Ombudsman Institute.
During the meeting, the sides held a dialogue on a number of issues in the field of human rights.
Jamila Jamanbaeva noted that the Akyikatchy Institute strives to strengthen democracy, ensure fundamental norms and standards of human rights and freedoms.
“The Institute makes every effort to implement the necessary measures in the field of human rights and freedoms. Of course, to achieve our goals, we need to strengthen our Institute. The first steps in this direction are already being implemented; a draft constitutional law “On Akyikatchy (Ombudsman) of the Kyrgyz Republic” has been developed. If adopted, such a law would strengthen the independence of the Institute and expand its mandate. The bill is currently being considered by the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The bill underwent an examination procedure by such authoritative international institutions as the Venice Commission, OSCE ODIHR, UN OHCHR and, of course, we held a number of public hearings with the participation of civil society.
We are ready for active interaction and exchange of experience with the European Union in all areas that in the future can bring good results and help improve the quality of life of our citizens. We highly appreciate the efforts of the European Union to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need,” said the Ombudsman.
Member of the European Parliament Tomasz Zdechovsky expressed confidence in the importance of continuing dialogue in the field of protecting human rights and freedom.
“Kyrgyzstan occupies a leading position in Central Asia in promoting democratic principles. In this regard, we are ready to cooperate with you more, as we want to see good results. Being an ombudsman is difficult and not everyone can bear such responsibility. We see that your institute is taking a number of important steps in the field of human rights protection. In many cases, you take the hit yourself. We hope that you will continue to work hard in this direction. As they say, if you sleep through democracy, you can wake up in autocracy. Thanks to your ambassador, we have a very good understanding of Kyrgyzstan. We are ready to be in touch with you and continue the dialogue,” said Tomasz Zdechovsky.
During the meeting, the importance of cooperation between the parties in adopting the best international practices in developing legislation, as well as studying human rights mechanisms, was discussed.
As a result of the meeting, the parties reached mutual understanding on all pressing issues in the field of rights to protect freedom and human rights in accordance with generally accepted principles and international law.
