Bishkek, Jan.23, 2020. /Kabar/. In Kyrgyzstan, women’s life expectancy exceed men’s, the press service of the country’s National Statistics Committee reported.
Experts from the Committee conducted a study, on the basis of which analytical report on gender indicators in the Kyrgyz Republic and on improving the methodology of gender indicators was prepared.
As of Jan.1, 2020, on the results of analysis, women accounted for 50.4 % of the total population, while the number of women and men in the working age population was almost equal, amounting to 1.8 million and 1.9 million people, respectively.
With regard to the distribution of the population by place of residence, urban settlements are dominated by women (52 %) and rural areas by men (51 %). Women outnumber men in Issyk-Kul (50.2 %) and Chui (50.7 %) Oblasts, and in the cities of Bishkek (53.2 %) and Osh (%).
Men’s average life expectancy in Kyrgyzstan at the beginning of 2019 was 67.4 years and women’s-75.6 years, i.e., the gender gap in life expectancy makes 8.2 years.
According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) data, the biological standard in the life expectancy gap between women and men should not exceed 5 years. For example, in EU countries, that norm is observed, while in Kyrgyzstan it is 1.6 times higher than the norm.
The study notes that in terms of this indicator, Kyrgyzstan is behind Uzbekistan (6.6 years) and Tajikistan (7 years).
