Bishkek, July 9, 2018. / Kabar /. The outbreak of locusts in Kyrgyzstan will last two more years, head of the plant protection department of the Chemicalization and Plant Protection Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration Almaz Alakunov told at Kabar News Agency.
He said that a mass outbreak of locusts has been observed since 2017.
"This is connected with their biology. The fact is that the locusts every 8-12 years gives such a flash. This is the expected period and it started in 2017. The last outbreak was in 2008. After 9 years, again, it's like a wave. As I said, this is connected, basically, with their natural features, when every 8-12 years there is a flash. In addition, the distribution of locusts is influenced by favorable weather conditions like humidity with precipitation," he explained.
Alakunov said that in 2017, the Department of Plant Chemicalization processed about 107 thousand hectares of land, to date, in 2018 - 128 thousand 299 hectares.
"136 thousand 479 hectares are inhabited by locusts, more than 94% of them have been processed. The work is being completed, only Naryn oblast remains, where a state of emergency was declared a month ago in connection with this problem. At the moment, 88% of the populated area has been processed there," he added.
The interlocutor of the editorial stressed that there is no damage from locusts, because processing is carried out in a timely manner.
"Last year, we received from FAO and UNFPA more than 10 spraying equipment. Its efficiency is many times more than traditional. Soviet tractors could spray 20 hectares in a day, while the new ones process more than 400 hectares," the head of the Department said.
He noted that the outbreak of locusts lasts 4 years, that is, two more years Kyrgyzstan will face this problem.
