Over 1.5 mln Kyrgyzstanis to be provided with clean water by end of program

Bishkek, Sept. 17, 2020 /Kabar/. Presentation of drinking water supply and sanitation program under the State Agency for Water Resources under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic took place on Thursday.

During the event, Deputy Director of the agency Saipidin Momunov told about the implementation of the program for development of drinking water supply and sanitation systems in Kyrgyzstan until 2026.

"In connection with the adoption of the National Strategy 2018-2040, as well as taking into account the investments attracted, it became necessary to put into effect the corresponding strategy. In the previous strategy the volume of financial resources was specified in the amount of KGS 24 billion, in the updated program this amount grew up to KGS 70 billion.

Also, the number of problem villages increased, now there are 715 instead of 425. The program is aimed at improving the supply of drinking water of normal quality to the population of Kyrgyzstan. The priorities are safe and quality water supply, development of a management system and government regulation, and increasing transparency in this sphere," Momunov said.

The deputy director of the Water Resources Agency also added that the construction plan is currently designed for the period 2020-2024. By the end of the program, over 1.5 million people should be provided with clean water.

The budget of the program is KGS 70 billion, including KGS 2 billion from the republican budget. It is financed by the means of the republican budget and external investments of the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and European Investment Bank, State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of the Swiss Confederation (SECO), Islamic Development Bank, Government of China, Saudi Fund for Development, UNDP, UNICEF.
