Parliament must call presidential elections within one week after resignation of head of state: speaker

Bishkek, Oct. 21, 2020. /Kabar/. The Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) must call a presidential elections within 7 days after the head of state resigns, Speaker Kanat Isayev said at a meeting of the Parliament on Wednesday.

He stated that the term, when MPs can call presidential elections, expires.

Deputies are now arguing about the agenda. Some MPs ask to include in the agenda the consideration of amendments to electoral legislation. In particular, the reduction of the passing threshold, the abolition of Form-2 (application form for change of electoral address) and a reduction of the electoral term.

The agenda of the Parliament's meeting includes three issues: the oath of a new deputy, consideration of prosecutor general's resignation and setting a date for presidential elections.

On Oct. 15 Sooronbay Jeenbekov stepped down as President of Kyrgyzstan amid ongoing protests in Bishkek followed by results of parliamentary elections on Oct. 4.
