Bishkek, June 9, 2022. /Kabar/. Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan to the United Nations in New York Aida Kasymalieva participated in an event to mark the World Environment Day, organized by the UN Environment Program.
The World Environment Day 2022 is held under the theme Only One Earth, the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported.
The event was attended by heads of permanent missions of member states to the UN, as well as their representatives. UN Secretary General António Guterres' speech was delivered in the welcoming part, as well as a representative of Sweden, where the Stockholm+50 International Meeting was held, and mayor of Gretna, Louisiana, USA.
In her speech, Aida Kasymalieva noted planetary crises such as climate change, destruction of ecosystems and environmental pollution, which disproportionately affect mountainous countries, including Kyrgyzstan. In this regard, she informed of the country's set of initiatives aimed at addressing these problems.
In particular, the permanent representative of Kyrgyzstan informed about the UN General Assembly's declaration of 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, the intention to initiate a resolution to declare a "Decade of Action for Mountain Development", as well as further promotion by the Kyrgyz side of the idea of establishing the Mountain Countries Development Fund and developing the UN Special Program on Mountain Forests Conservation.
Kasymalieva called for support for the efforts of Kyrgyzstan and all mountain countries to contribute to their effective achievement of the SDGs in the context of climate change, protection of biodiversity, environmental security and "green" recovery after the coronavirus pandemic.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year it is hosted by Sweden.
