The progress of the electoral system of Kyrgyzstan became evident during the elections to the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) in 2015 and those of the president in 2017, Pierre von Arx, head of the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek, told at a meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Bishkek.
Pierre von Arx delivered a report at the session on “Strengthening Citizen Participation in Creating Safe Communities”. He drew the participants' attention on the unique experience of Kyrgyzstan in achieving and strengthening parliamentary democracy in recent years.
The head of the OSCE office marked the successful electoral reform in the country.
“The progress of the electoral system of Kyrgyzstan was evident during the elections to the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) in 2015 and those of the president in 2017, when all citizens had equal access to the electoral process,” Pierre von Arx said.
He also emphasized the role of women in building peace and building a democratic society.
“In Kyrgyzstan, the OSCE office supports 24 initiative groups of women whose activities are aimed at conflict prevention and resolution. Priorities are family planning, prevention of family and child abuse,” he said.
The head of the OSCE office also pointed out the role of parliamentarians in building a secure community, faith in parliamentary diplomacy.
The autumn meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) is held in Bishkek from October 3 to 6, in which more than 150 parliamentarians from 46 countries of Europe, Asia and North America participate.
