Bishkek, Feb.11, 2020. /Kabar/. A Jamila play, based on Kyrgyz writer Chyngyz Aitmatov’s novel of the same name, was shown on Feb. 10 on the stage of Shri Ram Centre in New Delhi (India).
According to the press service of the Kyrgyz Embassy, the deepest meaning of the work of the world famous writer was revealed by Indian Rangashilpi theater group from Calcutta in the framework of the 21st Bharat Rang Mahotsav International Theatre Festival, which is held these days in New Delhi.
"As a director, I have faced several difficulties in this novel. The story is written in such a way that it has many cinematic elements. So it was a big challenge to represent a play. For me, Jamila is a story of redemption, of liberation of love from social slavery. It is a play about a woman's struggle for freedom of expression of her love, so the opportunity to work as a director in this play was a really useful experience and achievement," director Plaban Basu said.
Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to India Asein Isayev, attended the play, thanked the cast with a successful performance, and expressed hope for further fruitful joint cooperation and visits to Kyrgyzstan with other direction.
The play, presented in Hindi language, lasted 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Jamila is the first major novel by Chyngyz Aitmatov, published originally in Russian in 1958.
The novel is told from the point of view of a fictional Kyrgyz artist, Seit, who tells the story by looking back on his childhood.
The story recounts the love between his new sister-in-law Jamilya and a local crippled young man, Daniyar, while Jamilya's husband, Sadyk, is "away at the front" (as a Soviet soldier during World War II).
Louis Aragon lauded the novelette as the "world's most beautiful love story".
