President acquaints with implementation of irrigation and water supply projects in Osh

Bishkek, June 11, 2020. /Kabar/. Today, June 11, Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov familiarized himself with the implementation of projects to expand irrigation networks and provide clean drinking water in Aravan region of Osh Oblast, his press service reported.

Director of the State Agency for Water Resources under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic Kokumbek Tashtanaliyev said that with the full completion of the project in the village of Kerkidan of Aravan region, water supply will be improved on 2654 hectares of land.

Construction works were started in January 2018 and as of today they are almost completed. The total length of the canals is about 60 km. The project is being implemented with the assistance of the World Bank.

The President also got acquainted with the implementation of the project on providing clean drinking water to the population in Kerkidan and Esenbai villages of Aravan region, and in Kur-Tash and Karimberdi villages of Nookat region of Osh Oblast.

The construction works are expected to be completed in the near future.

With the full completion of the works, about three thousand residents of the mentioned villages will have access to clean drinking water.

This project is being implemented with funds from the national budget.

President Jeenbekov noted the establishment of an irrigation water system helps create new irrigated land and jobs, reduce internal migration and promote comprehensive regional development.

Kyrgyzstan’s State Program for the Development of Irrigation until 2026 is being implemented in three stages. Within the framework of the first and second phases, 31 water management facilities will be commissioned by 2024, which will make it possible to develop 27 thousand hectares of new irrigated land and improve water supply on 46 thousand hectares of land.

Over the past three years, residents of 107 villages in the country have gained access to clean drinking water. In 2018, KGS 350 million was allocated for implementation of these projects, and last year KGS 500 million was allocated from the national budget.

In general, all regions of Kyrgyzstan will be provided with clean water in the next five years.

President Jeenbekov is in Osh Oblast for his two-day working trip. On June 10, he honored the memory of those who died during the June 2010 tragic events and laid flowers at the Tears of Mothers memorial complex.

On the same day, the Kyrgyz President visited the first machine-building plant in Kyrgyzstan.
