Bishkek, Oct. 14, 2022. /Kabar/. “The Kyrgyz Republic has sufficient water and energy resources and is one of the leaders in the Central Asian region in terms of their reserves,” President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov said at the Russia-Central Asia Summit in Astana city of Kazakhstan.

The head of state stressed that in the context of global climate change, Kyrgyzstan intends to gradually switch to renewable energy sources, primarily in hydropower, with the simultaneous introduction of resource-saving and environmentally friendly technologies.

“The energy potential of the country's water resources is estimated at about 150 billion kWh, but today we use less than 10% of our potential. In this regard, the Kyrgyz side is interested in further enhancing cooperation in the field of attracting direct investment in the energy sector, the construction of hydro power plants and the development of renewable energy sources. In June of this year, I launched the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1. To date, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have confirmed their interest in participating in the construction of this hydropower plant,” Sadyr Zhaparov saidemphasizing that the implementation of this project will strengthen energy security and optimize the use of water resources in the region.

Taking the opportunity, Sadyr Zhaparov invited all other investors to mutually beneficial investment cooperation in the hydropower complex, including on the principles of public-private partnership. He noted that small and medium-sized hydropower plants play a very important role in ensuring the water and energy security of the entire region.
