Bishkek, Sept. 23, 2024. / Kabar /. On September 22, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations Secretariat in New York (USA).
Before the meeting, Sadyr Zhaparov signed the UN Book of Distinguished Visitors with best wishes for the Organization.
Welcoming the Kyrgyz president, Antonio Guterres expressed gratitude for the hospitality and cordiality shown during his visit to Kyrgyzstan.
He emphasized that he considers Sadyr Zhaparov a great friend and noted that the UN doors are always open for him.
The Secretary-General also noted that Kyrgyzstan occupies a special place in Central Asia in the implementation of mountain initiatives and has significant potential to take a leading position in the field of renewable energy and climate projects.
In these matters, António Guterres noted the personal efforts of the Kyrgyz president and expressed gratitude to him for his active position in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Sadyr Zhaparov noted that he warmly recalls António Guterres' visit to Kyrgyzstan, which gave a powerful impetus to further strengthening cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN.
President Zhaparov emphasized that Kyrgyzstan recognizes the UN as an authoritative and universal international organization, and expressed confidence that its activities will continue to be aimed at maintaining peace and prosperity for all mankind, as well as solving global socio-economic and climate problems.
The president reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on people-centered policies. He announced the start of the second voluntary national review of the SDGs, which is aimed at further developing the country and achieving the ambitious goal of joining the top 30 countries in the world by 2030.
The head of state outlined climate challenges for the region, such as melting glaciers and declining water resources. He called for support for the creation of the UN Regional Centre for Energy Efficiency and proposed a mechanism for exchanging public debt for “green” projects, which would be a significant contribution to the fight against climate change. At the same time, President Sadyr Zhaparov drew attention to the importance of promoting the mountain agenda, invited the UN to take part in the preparation of the Second Global Mountain Summit “Bishkek+25”, which will be held in 2027, and proposed the creation of an international platform “UN-Mountains” to coordinate actions on the sustainable development of mountain regions.
