President Jeenbekov visits family of Chyngyz Aitmatov

Bishkek, Mar.7, 2020./Kabar/.On the eve of International Women's Day, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov visited family of famous Kyrgyz writer Chyngyz Aitmatov, his press service said on Saturday.

President Jeenbekov congratulated the writer's wife, Maria Aitmatova on her spring holiday. The Kyrgyz leader wished her strong health and well-being.

Jeenbekov talked to Aitmatov's relatives at home. Son of the writer - Eldar Aitmatov has told about plans on reconstruction of the Chyngyz Aitmatov House-Museum, and also about current activity and plans of Manas and Aitmatov National Academy, the vice-president of which he is.

Chyngyz Aitmatov (1928-2008) was a Soviet and Kyrgyz author who wrote in both Kyrgyz and Russian.

He is one of the best known figures in Kyrgyzstan's literature.

His representative works : 'Jamila' (1958), 'The First Teacher' (1967), 'Farewell, Gyulsary!' (1967), 'The White Ship' (1972), and 'The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years' (1988) were translated in more than 20 languages across the world.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Aitmatov's novels found a new audience in the West and gained popularity in Germany.

He died of pneumonia and kidney failure on June 10, 2008, in Nuremberg, Germany, and was laid to rest in Kyrgyzstan.
