President Zhaparov meets with Executive Director of Green Climate Fund Yannick Glemaric

Bishkek, Nov. 2, 2021 / Kabar /. President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov met today with Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Yannick Glemarec in Glasgow

The issues of expanding bilateral cooperation were discussed, in particular, the future implementation of topical projects in the field of food security and agriculture.

The head of state drew attention to the fact that in recent years the most acute problems are intense melting of glaciers, depletion of water resources, transport emissions, etc.

He said that the Kyrgyz Republic supports the Paris Agreement, recently adopted the "Nationally Determined Contribution of the Kyrgyz Republic" until 2030. There is a climate investment program and a climate finance center. Kyrgyzstan has estimated the cost of climate change mitigation and adaptation at nearly USD 7 billion and USD 3 billion, respectively.

Sadyr Zhaparov assured that the Kyrgyz Republic supports the activities of the Green Climate Fund and welcomes project cooperation with it. He noted that three targeted programs totaling USD 3.4 million will help develop and implement adaptation measures in various sectors of the economy.

The head of state stressed that the Kyrgyz side supports the further expansion of cooperation with the Green Climate Fund on adaptation projects with the participation of such United Nations agencies as the United Nations Development Program, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program and others.

Sadyr Zhaparov noted that Kyrgyzstan welcomes the Fund's approval of two new projects in the field of food security and agriculture for a total of USD 38.6 million.

At the same time, the president announced the country's intention to apply for new climate finance projects after Glasgow. In this regard, Sadyr Zhaparov asked to provide expert and technical assistance to specialists of Kyrgyzstan in the preparation of target projects and to accelerate the accreditation of Kyrgyz organizations that have the right to apply to the Green Climate Fund.

Yannick Glemarec stressed that the Green Climate Fund is always ready and open to cooperation with Kyrgyzstan.

Glemarec expressed interest regarding the proposal of the head of state, noting that there is a model according to which the Trust Fund can provide USD 1 million in the form of a grant for one year.

The sides agreed to discuss a new draft agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and the GCF to expand cooperation and design work in Kyrgyzstan.
