Bishkek, Jan.20, 2020. /Kabar/. Azamat Shambilov has announced his intention to leave the post of Regional Director of Penal Reform International (PRI) Office in Central Asia as he completes his mission in the region and moves to another job.
According to the press service of the organization, Shambilov remains an attorney representative of the International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation (IPPF) on implementation of complex directions and prison reform in the CIS countries.
Under Azamat Shambilov's leadership, the PRI Office in Central Asia has achieved sustainable systemic changes in the prevention of torture, effective monitoring of prisons, the introduction of alternative sanctions and the development of probation.
Thanks to his initiative, the Association of Public Oversight Commissions in Kazakhstan was established, prison reform in Tajikistan has reached a new level, a probation institute has been introduced, and programs for the re-socialization of convicts have been launched in prisons of Kyrgyzstan.
Azamat Shambilov will be replaced by PRI Deputy Regional Director Zhanna Nazarova for Kazakhstan and Anel Tleukesh for Kyrgyzstan.
Penal Reform International (commonly known as PRI) was founded in London in 1989. It is an international nongovernmental organization working on penal and criminal justice reform worldwide.
PRI's stated goal is to promote safe and secure societies where offenders are held to account, victims’ rights are recognised, sentences are proportionate and the primary purpose of prison is social rehabilitation not retribution.
PRI has five offices worldwide.
