Profile committee of Kyrgyz Parliament approve bill on holding referendum on April 11

Bishkek, March 2, 2021 / Kabar /. Deputies of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial-Legal Issues and the Jogorku Kenesh Regulations of the Kyrgyz Parliament approved a bill on setting a date to hold a referendum on the adoption of a new Constitution for April 11.

The decision was made today at a meeting of the committee. This issue will be further considered at a meeting of the chamber.

It should be noted that the referendum will be held alongside with elections to local councils.

Recall that the draft Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic was published on the official website of the Jogorku Kenesh for public discussion on Nov. 17, 2020. By the decree of the Acting President, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh Talant Mamytov, the Constitutional Counsel was created on Nov. 20, 2020.

The main difference in the new draft Constitution is that it is proposed to switch to a presidential form of government. It is also proposed to reduce the number of deputies from 120 to 90.
