Brussels, June 19, 2019. /Kabar/. Remediation of uranium tailings will start in Kyrgyzstan at the end of this year, Pascal Daures, the European Commission representative told during the briefing in Brussels.

The work is carried out within the framework of the Environmental Rehabilitation in Central Asia project.

“We've selected seven objects in the region. Among them are Mailuu-Suu, Min-Kush and Shekaftar in Kyrgyzstan. There are two facilities in Tajikistan and two in Uzbekistan,” he said.

“The work at seven sites is estimated at EUR 85 million, for the remaining 50 million we are looking for potential donors around the world, including countries in Central Asia,” Daures said.

The European Union allocated an additional EUR 10 million at the last donor conference on the remediation of uranium facilities in Central Asia in November 2018. These funds are in addition to EUR16 million previously provided by the EU for this purpose.
