Representative of Uzbekistan appointed deputy secretary-general of SCO

Bishkek, Jan. 8, 2025. / Kabar /. On January 1, 2025, Uzbekistan’s representative, Batyr Tursunov, officially assumed the position of Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Dunyo News Agency reported.

Batyr Tursunov, aged 50, graduated from the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies, now known as the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, as well as the I. Muminov Institute of Philosophy and Law at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.

In 2023, Tursunov served as Minister-Counselor at Uzbekistan’s Embassy in China while also acting as Uzbekistan’s Permanent Representative to the SCO Secretariat.

The Secretary-General and Deputy Secretaries-General are appointed for three-year terms, overseeing the implementation of SCO decisions and coordinating activities among member states.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance established in 2001. It aims to promote regional cooperation, stability, and development. The organization primarily focuses on counterterrorism, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges.

The SCO has 9 full members: China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran (joined in 2023).

The SCO collaborates with observer states (e.g., Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia) and dialogue partners (e.g., Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia), expanding its influence across Eurasia.
