Representatives of UNHCR and Migration Service of Kyrgyzstan discuss protection of refugees' rights

Bishkek, Sept. 12, 2018 / Kabar /. Deputy Chairman of the State Migration Service of Kyrgyzstan Samat Toktobolotov met with Senior Regional Counselor of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for Legal Affairs Urara Furukawa and UNHCR Regional Adviser Marin Roman.

During the meeting, Ms. Urara Furukawa briefed on the activities of UNHCR in Kyrgyzstan in the area of ​​asylum and protection of the rights of refugees. She also noted that UNHCR supports our state in the implementation of its international obligations and the implementation of the legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic in this direction.

In turn, Samat Toktobolotov thanked the UNHCR office for the provided support, told about the work on the issues under discussion. He also noted the need to address issues relating to persons who were previously identified as refugees within the mandate of UNHCR.

Also, the meeting participants discussed issues related to the organization and holding on September 24 of this year of the 5th meeting of the highest officials of the participating countries of the Almaty process, at which the Kyrgyz Republic currently chairs the session.

Summarizing the results of the meeting, the sides expressed their readiness to intensify further joint activities on the development of the asylum system and procedures for determining refugee status.

Kyrgyzstan joined the UN 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol to it in 1996. From this period, our republic began to receive refugees and implement long-term measures in the sphere of refugees (voluntary repatriation, integration into the local community, resettlement to third countries).
