Bishkek, March 18, 2022 . / Kabar / . An experience sharing conference took place in the Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek on Friday within the framework of the Engaging Communities for Better Schools in the Kyrgyz Republic project.
The event was organized by the Aga Khan Foundation in the Kyrgyz Republic in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan and with financial support from the Japanese Social Development Fund, managed by the World Bank.
The conference was attended by representatives of the World Bank, the Embassy of Japan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, AKDN/AKF/MSDSP KG, donor organizations and project beneficiaries.
CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation in the Kyrgyz Republic Davlatsulton Dorgabekova, Japanese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Shigeki Maeda, Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Kyrgyzstan Barkat Fazal delivered their welcoming speeches at the beginning of the conference.
They noted the successful completion of the project, which has developed inclusive approaches to parent interaction in Kyrgyzstan, promoting greater accountability and responsiveness of teachers and school management, and thus contributing to improved student achievement.
Further, regional coordinators provided detailed information about the specific results of the project, among which:
- creation of 358 boards of trustees on the territory of Kyrgyzstan since the beginning of the project’s implementation;
- increasing the participation of parents in the educational process;
- creation of so called initiative groups, volunteers;
- 38 associations of boards of trustees and 405 national coaches throughout the country were trained.
Representative of the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan Samara Umralieva noted the importance of the project assistance in the development of education in the republic:
"The creation of boards of trustees in 358 schools significantly improved facilities and helped improve the quality of education overall. More than 3,000 school principals were trained as part of this large-scale project. The project also increased the skills of district and city departments of education, school administrations, school board members, educators, students, and other stakeholders.
The Engaging Communities for Better Schools in the Kyrgyz Republic project was launched in June 2017 by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF). It was implemented in 358 schools located in Alai, Kadamjay, Moskovsky, Dzheti-Oguz, Toguz-Toro, Naryn, Kara-Buura regions, as well as in the Sverdlovsk district of Bishkek and Osh city.
The project resulted in the creation of 358 boards of trustees as platforms to increase the level of interaction between parents, students, and school administrators. In addition, social accountability mechanisms were introduced to allow school administrators and communities to assess the performance of schools’ activities against existing national education standards and agree on joint action plans to address identified gaps.
