Rosatom to allocate over 2 bln rubles for remediation of tailings dumps in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, March 28, 2024 / Kabar/. The state corporation Rosatom will allocate 2 billion 141 million rubles for the remediation of tailings dumps in Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Boobek Azhikeyev and General Director of the Rosatom state corporation Alexey Likhachev met on Wednesday in Sochi city of Russia on the sidelines of the international forum “AtomEXPO-2024”.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the implementation of the interstate target program “Reclamation of the territories of the CIS member states affected by uranium mining production,” as well as the continuation of work to eliminate environmental and radiation damage from former uranium and mining production in Kyrgyzstan for the period 2024-2030.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was signed between the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the rehabilitation of territories of the Kyrgyz Republic that were affected by uranium mining and mining industries.

The purpose of the agreement is to protect the population living in the areas where tailings are located and reduce the risk of emergency situations. Thus, as part of the agreement, the Russian side plans to allocate 2 billion 141 million Russian rubles to Kyrgyzstan for the remediation of tailings dumps. In addition, the agreement provides for the exemption of work performed from taxes and other payments on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.

It is noted that the signed agreement contributes to the improvement of the environmental situation and the efficient use of territories, the socio-economic development of settlements remaining after the liquidation of enterprises that produced uranium products, as well as the further expansion and deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Russia in the field of the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
