Bishkek, Sept. 21, 2023. /Kabar/. During his working visit to New York, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov met with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva.
Issues of further expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with the IMF, as well as the development of the global economic situation, were discussed during the meeting.
Sadyr Zhaparov noted that Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to cooperation with the IMF, which in turn provides constant support in promoting structural reforms and, in general, in the development of the country’s economy.
Sadyr Zhaparov emphasized that in recent years the consequences of climate change have become more noticeable throughout the world. This issue is one of the most important issues on the global agenda and requires structural changes for the transition to a green economy.
During the conversation, the President paid special attention to the energy sector of Kyrgyzstan, noting that in the next 5 years a whole program of large-scale projects will be implemented to significantly increase capacity and reconstruct the main generating capacities with the construction of new hydro power plants.
The head of state stated that today Kyrgyzstan uses only 13% of the country’s water and energy resources, while being a country rich in water resources. The state, on its own and with the help of investors, will launch from 50 to 100 small hydroelectric power plants in the country in the coming years, of which 16 by the end of the year.
In this context, Sadyr Zhaparov emphasized Kyrgyzstan’s interest in developing “green” initiatives, including with international organizations.
In addition, he touched upon the issue of digitalization, noting that in recent years in Kyrgyzstan, like many other developing countries, there has been a steady trend of introducing digital technologies into the financial sector.
President Sadyr Zhaparov highly appreciated the work being done by the Fund in this direction and expressed hope for close cooperation with the IMF in the future.
Welcoming Sadyr Zhaparov, Kristalina Georgieva noted with satisfaction the opportunity to personally meet with the President and discuss the further expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation between the IMF and Kyrgyzstan.
She highly appreciated the results of the ongoing reforms in the country, noting the IMF’s intention to further strengthen cooperation with the Kyrgyz side.
Discussing the area of digitalization, the Managing Director of the IMF emphasized the importance of introducing digital technologies into all spheres of human life. Considering that rapid digitalization opens up new opportunities, including for business.
In addition, Kristalina Georgieva emphasized with satisfaction the attention that Kyrgyzstan pays to the issue of climate change.
She emphasized that the IMF is dealing with the climate issue because it is important for the members of the organization.
In this context, Kristalina Georgieva informed about the readiness of IMF specialists, together with the Kyrgyz side, to pay more attention to this issue.
In conclusion, the parties agreed to strengthen effective cooperation aimed at implementing a comprehensive program of economic and social reforms carried out within the framework of agreements with the IMF.
