Bishkek, Aug. 6, 2021. / Kabar /. “Central Asia is an important strategic region, where the development of comprehensive partnership and interaction meets the long-term interests of all states in the region,” President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov said speaking at the Consultative Meeting of the Heads of Central Asian States in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan.
President Zhaparov noted that this year the countries of Central Asia are celebrating the 30th anniversary of independence.
“Since then, we have found our worthy place in the world community. The time has come to join forces and strengthen regional cooperation. The states of Central Asia have all the prerequisites for expanding and deepening trade, economic, transport, logistics, water and energy ties, as well as consolidating efforts to combat the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic," Zhaparov said.
He noted that first of all, the countries need to closely integrate in the region, harmoniously act as a single whole in economic terms, in particular, the national strategies for sustainable development of the Central Asian countries should complement each other and take into account the capabilities of each.
In this regard, the Kyrgyz president greeted Natalia Gherman, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, and noted the important role of the UN Regional Center.
The head of state recalled that the upcoming year 2022 will be marked by the 30th anniversary of the membership of the Central Asian countries in the UN. During their membership in the UN, the Central Asian countries have made a feasible contribution to strengthening international peace and security, and have come up with a number of important and significant initiatives. In this regard, Sadyr Zhaparov proposed to hold a Central Asia-UN summit in 2022.
At the same time, the president added that the development of cultural and humanitarian ties is important, the further advancement of which is facilitated by the common cultural space of all Central Asian countries, linguistic identity and common history.
Sadyr Zhaparov drew attention to the fact that, for its part, the Kyrgyz Republic is ready to expand and deepen cooperation with the countries of Central Asia both in a bilateral and multilateral format, including today's “five-sided” dialogue.
The head of state expressed readiness for a constructive dialogue with partners in the region to find solutions in a mutually beneficial manner for the benefit of stability and prosperity in Central Asia.
He noted that all the countries of Central Asia have a large volume of energy resources. At the same time, despite the presence of classical energy sources, today Central Asia has significant potential for the transition to environmentally friendly electricity.
“We believe that the key factor for the sustainable development of the Central Asian states is the comprehensive and efficient use of water and energy resources. In this regard, Kyrgyzstan intends to gradually implement a number of projects for the construction of hydroelectric power plants, which are an environmentally friendly source of energy. Economic mechanisms for water use should be developed and implemented so that the upstream countries have the opportunity and incentive to accumulate water resources for irrigation needs during the growing season, regardless of water availability, including during low water periods, calculated for several years in advance. Kyrgyzstan intends to actively develop renewable energy sources,” Sadyr Zhaparov said.
