SAEPF plans to implement two projects jointly with UNDP and UN FAO on climate change

Bishkek, Dec. 4, 2018. /Kabar/. The State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) of the Kyrgyz Republic plans to implement a joint project with UNDP to improve the climate resilience of vulnerable communities in the south of Kyrgyzstan.

Abdykalyk Rustamov, head of the SAEPF, told at a press conference at the Kabar News Agency that the project is aimed at increasing the resilience to natural disasters in Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken oblasts.

“Why does a series of landslides occur in the country? This is due to the degradation of soil and pasture due to improper grazing. And we need to carry out certain work, tell the people what to do. We have a database, and we know what is happening in Naryn and Osh oblasts and where there are any consequences of climate change. These data are published on the institution’s website,” Rustamov said.

He also noted that it is planned to implement a project proposal with UN FAO to combat the effects of climate change in forests and pastures; a lot of work will also be done here, where the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Agency for Environmental Protection will be involved

“The project is estimated at $ 40 million, the total cost of the two projects is about $ 90 million. Next summer we are waiting for the approval of the second draft. It is necessary to coordinate the activities of all partners so that there is no repetition,” Rustamov said.
