Issyk-Kul, May 15, 2021. / Kabar /. The 9th International Issyk-Kul Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Marathon "Run the Silk Road" in memory of the 80th Olympic Games bronze medalist in the marathon run Satymkul Dzhumanazarov started Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at the hippodrome in Cholpon-Ata town of Issyk-Kul Oblast.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov gave the start of the marathon.
The State Agency for Youth Affairs, Physical Culture and Sports of the Kyrgyz Republic said the event aimed at:
- Promotion of healthy lifestyles, introducing the population to regular exercise of physical culture and sports;
- Strengthening of cooperation of SCO member states through sporting events;
- Development of international sporting friendships and tourism, identifying the strongest marathon runners in the region.
About 2.5 thousand participants from 30 countries are taking part in the races.
The total distance of the marathon is 42 km 195 meters, half-marathon - 21 km 97 meters, Nordic walking - 10 thousand and 3 thousand meters.
Athletes who fulfill the standards of the marathon will receive a license for the World Championship, the Olympic and Asian Games.
