Bishkek, Apr. 30, 2020 / Kabar /. The Spotlight Initiative of the United Nations and the European Union allocated USD 200,000 to Kyrgyzstan to address the increase in violence against women and girls during the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.
Spotlight Initiative is aimed at meeting the urgent needs of women and girls who have suffered violence or are at risk of violence in the current conditions of physical isolation and increased economic and social pressure.
The number of cases of domestic violence increased in Kyrgyzstan by 65% during the quarantine. Compared with the same period from March 24 to April 24, in 2019, 100 facts were registered in Bishkek, this year - 162 facts. These data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic were sent to the commandant of Bishkek, members of parliament and the Ministry of Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic. With the support of the Spotlight Initiative, temporary crisis centers have been set up for women and girls who have been abused. Emergency mobile teams for dealing with cases of gender-based violence will also operate to support women. Work is underway to coordinate psychosocial services provided online during COVID-19 and mechanisms for hotline phones associated with crisis centers.
The Spotlight Initiative will support a civil society-led information campaign to prevent gender-based and domestic violence during COVID-19. The program will aim to raise awareness through digital campaigns on preventive measures in the context of COVID-19, conducted by youth and women's activists at the local level.
The program also aims to assist the Kyrgyz Government in providing improved multisectoral and coordinated services for victims of violence by developing new formats that ensure the uninterrupted provision of services, including via the Internet, during quarantine restrictions.
