Shyrdak Festival takes place in Naryn

Bishkek, June 29, 2023. / Kabar/. The international festival "Kyrgyz Shyrdak - XIII" is held in Naryn from June 28 to 29.

The festival was attended by representatives of the embassies of Japan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic, international organizations, artisans, designers, cultural and art workers from all regions of the Kyrgyz Republic, engaged in the production of artistic products.

Within the framework of the festival, various competitions related to shyrdak are held. In addition, exhibitions of national dishes are organized, national games are held, a festive concert with a large program is organized. More than 70 artisans came to the holiday, more than 300 shyrdaks were exhibited.

On the last day of the festival, the results will be summed up, the best artisans will be awarded, a gala concert and fireworks will be held.

Shyrdak is a stitched, and often handmade colourful felt floor-covering. It is made using mosaic technique, which is one of the most difficult, while one of the most important qualities of shyrdak is durability. The average service life of a shyrdak is about 100 years, sometimes even more.

Making one shyrdak carpet is a laborious process, so it takes 2 to 6 months for craftswomen to make one carpet, provided that she only deals with this carpet, but most often Kyrgyz women work in groups, which mainly include representatives of the same family.

Among the Kyrgyz, the shyrdak carpet is one of the most valuable household items.
