Situation on Kyrgyz-Tajik border remains calm with stabilization tendency

Bishkek, Sept. 18, 2022 / Kabar /. As of 14:00 on September 18 of this year, the situation on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan remains calm, with a stabilization tendency, the press service of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

There were no attempts to escalate on the border line, no shots were fired. The parties maintain agreements on a ceasefire and the withdrawal of relevant forces, work in this direction continues.

The relevant commissions are working together to de-escalate the situation in the border area and reduce tension between the two states.

The clashes on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border started on Sept. 14.

The Tajik side attacked border guarding and civilian infrastructure objects of Kyrgyzstan along the perimeter of the state border in Batken Oblast. Tajikistan used heavy armored vehicles, multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) and aircraft in an attempt to seize the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.

According to the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Tajik military destroyed the infrastructure of outposts, as well as schools, kindergartens, retail outlets, first-aid posts, and houses. Shouting nationalist slogans, they showed blasphemy and subjected the bodies of the border guards of the Kyrgyz Republic who died at the post to mockery.

As a result, 36 people died, 134 are reported to be injured.

An emergency regime has been introduced in Batken Oblast.
