Snow leopard sculpture installed in Bishkek

Bishkek, Oct. 23, 2019. / Kabar/. A sculpture of a snow leopard and its food base was installed on the territory of Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan.

The press service of the branch of the NGO "Conservation Union of Germany (NABU)" in the Kyrgyz Republic said that they are the initiators.

According to author of the idea of ​​Tolkunbek Asykulov, it is important to protect not only the snow leopard itself, but also the animals that it eats: mountain goats, argali, woodchucks, less often roe deer, deer.

“The conservation of the snow leopard is not a one-day program, it is a rather capacious work, including not only monitoring, it is also enlightening activity, this is a different action to attract public attention and awareness about the modern ecology, this is also providing jobs so that the masses do not resort to poaching activities, ”he concluded.

Sculptor Marlen Bakachiev worked on the statue of the leopard and its polyester feed base.

International Snow Leopard Day was established in October 2013 in Bishkek at the World Wildlife Conservation Forum.

Of all the large representatives of the cat family, snow leopards are the most at risk of destruction. Only in Kyrgyzstan, where in the 80s there were about 1,400 individuals in the mountains, today there are an estimated 300 of them in the country.
