Strategies to combat all forms of violence against women and girls discussed in Bishkek

Bishkek, Nov. 5, 2018. /Kabar/. A subregional conference on “From Political Decisions to Actions. Eliminating Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls in Central Asia.” took place in Bishkek.

The event was attended by Vice Prime Minister Altynai Omurbekova, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Ozonnia Ojiello, as well as members of the Parliament, representatives of the civil society and experts from Central Asian countries.

The relevance of this conference is also due to the temporal context, since important political and legislative reforms are currently underway to address the problem of gender-based violence. Participants of the event noted the need to strengthen regional cooperation in order to eliminate gender-based violence that violates the rights of women and children, brings enormous economic damage to society and is an obstacle to sustainable development.

Two-day conference on “From Political Decisions to Actions. Eliminating Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls in Central Asia.” was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the UN-Women - the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Four UN agencies, together with partners, contribute to efforts to promote gender equality, empower women and girls and combat all forms of violence against women and girls in the region.
