Bishkek, Jan. 21, 2022 . / Kabar / . A study of media development indicators (MDI) will be conducted in Kyrgyzstan. This study is conducted by the Association of Communicators of Kyrgyzstan with the support of UNESCO.

This study begins with a postulate of the desired media development and proceeds to verify, by special means, how this postulate corresponds to the real achievements. Following are six main categories of media development indicators:

1) A legal system conducive to freedom of expression, pluralism and diversity of the media.

2) Pluralism and diversity of the media, a level "playing field" and transparency of ownership.

3) Media as a platform for democratic debate.

4) Professional capacity building and support of institutions which strengthen freedom of expression, pluralism and diversity.

5) Adequate infrastructure capacity to support independent and pluralistic media: the media sector is characterized by high or increasing levels of public access, including to marginalized groups, and effective use of technology to gather and distribute news and information appropriate to the local context.

6) Media resilience.

On Jan. 24, 2022, a multi-stakeholder advisory council (MAC) will meet to validate the launch of the Media Development Indicators (MDIs) in Kyrgyzstan.

The Council will meet three times until November 2022 to validate the launch of the Media Development Indicators Study (MDIS), to approve the draft report of the study, and to approve the final study.

The first meeting of MAC members will take place on Jan. 24, 2022.
