Bishkek, Aug. 25, 2022. / Kabar /. The Supreme Court of Belarus has refused to extradite former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to Kyrgyzstan because his conviction is related to persecution for political reasons, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Kyrgyz Republic said.
The former president was sentenced by a court decision of July 29, 2016 to 30 years in prison for the events of April 7, 2010 and other episodes of crimes.
The Prosecutor General's Office noted that they sent a petition to the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus for the recognition and execution in Belarus of the sentences of the Military Court of the Bishkek garrison and the Judicial Collegium for Criminal Cases and Cases on Administrative Offenses of the Military Court dated May 23, 2016. Also, the Prosecutor General's Office sent four requests for the extradition of Bakiev in order to bring him to criminal responsibility.
According to the letter of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus, the petition was denied. The Belarusian side, considers that his conviction is connected with persecution for political reasons, the report said.
